As we wait for the Charlotte rapper’s sophomore release, he gives us a taste of what to expect in the new year.
May has been on a tangent since the beginning of the year, not even that, he’s definitely been growing in prominence ever since announcing upcoming LP release thus spoke. The tagline of the EP: “oNNa path uv reDemptIoN, thus spoke a youNg soul tryNa spreaD peace, “they woulD’Nt lysteN” so DIs b Da result!”, is a braggadocious proclamation in itself. With exclusive production from juneayth., he delivers a short but sweet experience of wise grittiness.
“Wise man, one time in this bitch” he boasts on “bag!”, we hear May comes into his own. The unique cadence and tone of his voice always impressive. The progression of his writing definitely skyrocketed since his “SAVEYUR .” days. He may be the next to rise up from Charlotte behind MAVI & LORD JAH-MONTE no doubt. The track presents a lighter tone with the classic Amerie sample as the next track “wuNtahme” is a clear polar opposite, more grittier than the former.
Coming off from the previous year, the rapper fully established his I N D collective, put in works a collaboration project, dropped a well received freestyle among other things. I truly believe this year will be a good year for the 22-year old MC. “wuNtahme” presents a Westside Gunn-esqe feel, featuring the “What’s Today’s Mathematics?” clip from the Wu-Tang bio series. “What cuzo Mont called me/As a jit, 5 percent,” he says. He mentions his mother, Kalena Shephard’s faith in his dream, ending the project with an inspiring phone conversation he had with her. “Mama knew a nigga could grind”, he ends his verse. Hearing this gives the listener a clear picture of his current mindset, a hopeful steadfastness view.
TWL was definitely a surprise to come and fill the masses’ spirits in spite of the sudden of NBA legend Kobe Bryant & daughter Gianna, which also impacted the rapper himself. With this we remind ourselves that in the face of hardship and adversity, as long as we persevere and keep going, we’ll be okay and that’s why we at Urban Gorillas are keeping an eye out for June.
