It was about a month ago when I was first introduced to 20-year old South London rapper Scuti through the music video for her song “You Know”. If you read my review for it, you’ll know that I was impressed enough to check out the rest of her catalogue and I’m happy to report that I’m now a fan.
This Is Skoo, is Scuti’s first project with London-based label Different Recordings. At only 6 tracks with an overall runtime of 16 minutes, this EP is a good sampler to give new listeners an idea of what she’s all about while also holding fans like myself over until an eventual full-length project that I imagine she’ll drop sometime later this year or at the top of 2021.
The same elements that I spoke about as highlights for “You Know” are developed a bit more on this project. Scuti seems to be trying to nourish her own unique sound of lullaby-like melodies and relaxed instrumentals that compliment her lowkey vocals. That understanding of one’s sound is one of the most valuable skills a young artist can develop and I’m glad to see Scuti headed in the right direction.
Besides her past singles, You Know and Huh, that were also packaged with this EP my favourite track has to be Weekend. Scuti’s crooning and word-drawing pairs very well with the windy instrumental here. I also appreciated the more introspective lyrics that we got on the project’s closer, Lucky, and I hope that she decides to explore more tracks like that in the future.
All in all, Scuti’s off to a pretty solid start with This Is Skoo. She’s shown that she has a reliable ear for production that goes well with her voice and a good grasp on what sets her apart from her peers. I’m excited to see where she goes from here. SKOOWUP!
