History has shown us that the internet has been one of the biggest advocates if not the biggest for underground artist. Many artist would send tapes to labels, try out for talent shows, and other things to get their name out to the world. Then came YouTube, where artist would make videos of covers that they would perform and upload to the web. Artist such as Justin Bieber, Tori Kelly, Shawn Mendes, and many other big names. But now in 2020 the game has changed even more and the time to catch someone’s attention is so slim.
What’s Next?
Social media has played the biggest part for artist in today’s world. Going on YouTube and searching for a cover of your favorite song takes too much time now. The user’s timeline is constantly changing and showing all the feed a user wants to see without using the search engine. So that goes to ask the question, “Where is there room for underground artist to put their name and music out to the public?”
The answer is minute or less videos on Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok that has a link to your Sound Cloud, Apple music, and Spotify.
Keeping it short and Quick
The attention span for a user on the phone or computer is short. That means artist need to put something out there that the viewer won’t regret wasting a minute on. Along with that a viewer today is way more likely to watch a minute or less cover on their device than 4 minute video. The idea is to catch as many people as you can with a short time. It’s almost a tease because if they like that minute cover the artist might just gain a follow and more engagements to full covers they have on YouTube and other work they have on different music platforms.
Dear Artists…
There’s a place for you in the music industry. There is a lane for everyone, and how you decide you want to share yourself to the world is up to you. Everyone wants to be the next star and the next star is currently nameless and not known. In the world of music your life can change tomorrow. Can you change yours in a minute.
