Oh Wonder, made up of Anthony West and Josephine Vander Gucht, has always been a band for the lovers. Although they’re still a relatively new group, the crowd immediately took to their indie, electro, synth-pop charm with their first release (“Oh Wonder) in September 2015. Their popularity grew at the speed of light, landing them a spot at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival less than two years later in April 2017.
I made the trek to Indio Valley with a dear friend for the infamous festival that year and was blessed to see Oh Wonder not only at Coachella, but at the Brooklyn Bowl in Las Vegas the night before. What a time. It’s clear that Anthony is the steady to Josephine’s sass, making for a charming and supremely engaging performance. Those closest to me know my make-or-breaker is the ability to dazzle during a live performance, and the radiance these two brought to the stage exceeded expectations.
The couple has since released two more albums – “Ultralife” in 2017 and “No One Else Can Wear Your Crown” on February 7, 2020. Just in time for Love Day. So, without further ado, I’m here to rave about “No One Else Can Wear Your Crown.”
My god. This album is everything, and I mean everything. “Angelic” is the first word that comes to mind. It’s no accident this album was released just one week before Valentine’s Day. These two have managed to cover the most raw extremes of love, loss, and personal triumph. They blessed us with a full electronic production and then some, with the latter songs being acoustic versions of the former. For suckers like me who die for some good piano and guitar, this is definitely a crowd pleaser.
Oh Wonder came out of the gates running and haven’t shown any signs of slowing down. Oh Wonder is pure gold, through and through. Always have been, always will be.
